Consumer advocates have spent years asking cable companies, regulators and legislators to give TV watchers the option of buying channels one by one rather than in large packages. The idea, of course, is that viewers who only watch 20 different channels shouldn’t be forced to buy 200 channels.
Cable companies have long argued that a la cart purchasing wouldn’t save consumers anything because channels that effectively cost 20 cents a month in bundles would cost several dollars a month if purchased independently.
The cable companies have always managed to block any laws or regulations that would force them to offer channels a la carte, which is why consumer advocates are now trying to take this matter to court.
