Domain Name News is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys may have failed to purchase the URL www.cowboys.com because an agent sent by the team to bid on the address misunderstood the auction process.

Persistent rumors say the agent bid “275,” thinking that the number meant $275 rather than its actual value, $275,000. The Cowboys, who currently make their online home at www.dallascowboys.com, would presumably get more Web traffic with the shorter URL, which has been used by a western apparel store.

Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis appeared unhappy when he heard the rumors of his team’s failure. The DMN sports department is investigating further.
