Co-blogger Andrew laughs at my obsession with cataloging the launch of new HD channels, but once he gets his HD television next week, he’ll understand my Lord of the Rings-ish compulsion to track down the One Ring, er, new high-def channels.

Anyway, the latest HD station to be announced is ESPNews HD, coming March 30, 2008.

The extra space on the widescreen broadcast will be used to cram additional graphics and scores around the shrunk-down HD video in the middle of the screen.

This approach, according to the folks at BroadcastingCable.com, differs from the HD feed of CNBC, where they paste the standard-def 4:3 video signal into the middle of the screen, and then surround it with HD graphics.

So basically you get an SD broadcast surrounded by HD graphics, while ESPNews HD will be entirely HD.

The article says DirecTV, Comcast and Time Warner have already agreed to carry the channel. No word on Verizon’s Fios picking it up. Grrr!!!
