I finally heard back from Verizon on why its Fios service is unable to broadcast Mavs games shown in high definition on HDNet.
From Verizon spokesman Bill Kula:
While we do carry HDNet as part of our FiOS TV lineup, we are not set up to accept the additional signal feed that HDNet provides for these particular Mavericks games. We apologize to our customers and hope that they will enjoy the other HD sports programming offered on FiOS TV.
The problem, it seems, is that when HDNet broadcasts Mavs games, it doesn’t do so on the main HDNet feed.
Instead, the game is essentially broadcast on a temporary second channel, while national programming continues on the regular HDNet channel.
That’s why viewers who subscribe to other services have to watch the games on alternate channels when they come on.
But Fios, apparently, doesn’t have any “empty” channels available to show the secondary HDNet feed used for the games.
Which stinks.
