Just a couple weeks after launching its well-reviewed bird’s eye view, the maps team at Microsoft Live Search has introduced an number of cool features, most of them related to driving directions. The site now gives you the options to skip the specific directions at one end of the journey (because you really don’t need turn-by-turn info around your home). It also gives “you’ve gone too far” landmarks and (in some cases) uses traffic information to vary routes.

But that’s not all. The official team blog has details about ten new features and hints of many more to come. All this competition at the intersection of map and search — Google, Yahoo, Ask and Microsoft are all rolling out regular upgrades — has been very good for computer users.

If you’re still using MapQuest, do yourself a favor and check out the competition.
