Phoenix Technologies, a California-based company that makes the code your computer uses to boot itself, says it has a new technology that would allow laptops to perform basic functions just seconds after you hit the “on” button.
The company’s HyperSpace program would reside inside computer hardware and bypass Microsoft Windows to provide functionality while the operating system sprang to life in the background. Eventually, HyperSpace could allow computer makers to bypass operating systems altogether.
Phoenix is already talking to several big computer makers about the technology, but it has no deals to announce. Wired Magazine reports that Microsoft opposes HyperSpace but that microchip and computer makers seem excited.
