I received one of the new Eee PCs from Asus on Monday for a review.
While you’ll be able to find my full take in the paper this Friday, I thought I’d share some early thoughts and a couple of photos of the tiny laptop.
My unit came installed with the Linux operating system (Windows XP is also available), 512 megabytes of RAM, four gigabytes of Flash memory, and the standard seven-inch screen.
The first thing I noticed is how quickly the unit boots up. A couple seconds and you’re in the OS.
Speaking of which, the operating system is extremely bare bones, but has everything that typical users will probably need: Web browser, word processor, PDF reader, Web camera and music/movie/photo player.
One thing I am a little disappointed in so far is the feel of the keyboard.
The board is obviously smaller than what you’ll find on a traditional laptop, but the keys are so small that I frequently press one or more keys next to the key I’m trying to press.
Plus, the hard plastic keys feel a little loose to the touch.
Still, so far I’m impressed. Check back Friday for the full scoop. I’ll also be shooting a video review that will run here on the blog, as well.
In the meantime, here’s a good article on the history of the Eee PC and how Asus plans to redefine the entry-level laptop.
More pics that I shot after the jump.
