In what seems like an effort beat out the XO (of One Laptop per Child fame) and Asus Eee, Dell has slashed the price of its Vostro 1000 laptop from $700 to $399.
The Dell looks like (and is) a real computer. It has a larger screen, faster processor and more memory than the Eee, which is tiny.
Indeed, the Eee feels like a hybrid of PDA and computer, which has obvious drawbacks but some real advantages as well. You wouldn’t want to type a novel on the Eee’s tiny keyboard, but it’s pretty easy to imagine toting it around in a satchel or even a large purse. You’d never do that with a Vostro.
Regardless of which computer looks better to you, the price cut is good news, for it will surely spur more cuts from Dell’s competition. You may want to wait a few weeks if you’re thinking of buying someone an entry-level laptop this Christmas.
