So Beowulf sold $28.1 million worth of tickets over the weekend, and about $8 million of that came from 638 screens equipped with 3D display systems from RealD, while another $3.6 million came from 84 Imax 3D screens.
I was one of those RealD viewers, and I have to say that the 3D display technology is leaps and bounds beyond the era of blue and red glasses.
The problem is that glasses are still involved.
Until the 3D effect is actually integrated into the projection or screen, I just don’t see 3D taking off. I don’t want to have to slip on my Dorktron 2000 glasses every time I flip on the news or head to the theater.
Fortunately, there is some work being done in this arena, although it seems like we’re still at least several years away from having 3D televisions in our living rooms.
Until then, keep your glasses handy.
