It took several months longer than expected but Mozilla has finally begun offering the beta version of its next-generation Web browser, Firefox 3. I’ve been using it for several hours this morning and I’m really impressed with how fast works, how well it renders pages, and how much it improves bookmarking.

Visually, Firefox 3 looks pretty similar to Firefox 2, but there are an enormous number of differences under the hood. The program has been built on top of a new rendering engine, which helps it load pages faster and allows it to do full-page zooms (rather than just enlarging text). Zooms can make pictures and graphics look a bit fuzzy in Windows, which is not really written to support them, but they look beautiful on Mac.

So far, the program seems very stable to me, but there are thousands of known bugs, so would-be users should proceed with caution, particularly if you use add-ons with Firefox 2. The new program will break the add-ons (at least until they are updated).
