That’s the advice from Cnet’s Dan Ackerman and bargain hunters should give it due consideration.
Ackerman’s argument, in brief, is that the cheapest laptops have so little power that they’ll be obsolete before you pull them out of the box. Rather than giving you years of enjoyment, you’ll only get a year of frustration before you break down and buy something new.
I’m not sure this argument will apply to folks who only want to use their computers for word processing, email and Web browsing, but it’s certainly true for folks who want to watch (or worse, edit) video on their machines.
Heck, the power demands of even the most basic versions of Windows Vista and Microsoft Office will probably make some low-end devices struggle with the basics.
