Even with HDTV prices falling fast, it’s hard to get one (legally) for less than $500. Folks who don’t want to spend that kind of money may have an option, though. A simple adapter and some free software can turn many computer monitors into HDTVs that can pull signals right off the air.

Cnet’s Rick Broida reports on what may be the cheapest option:

The PlusTV doesn’t come with a remote, but it does include an additional input for capturing video from analog sources (like VCRs). Plus, it’s compatible with Windows Media Center. The tuner will set you back $69 plus shipping, but there’s a $40 mail-in rebate. PCs make awesome DVRs; now’s your chance to experience it on the (super) cheap.

True, your 20 inch computer monitor won’t look as great as a 50-inch plasma, but it will look a lot crisper than any old clunker you have in your living room.
