According to new research from Pacific Media, 1080p LCD televisions outsold their 1080p plasma counterparts in October:
[I]n the hotly contested 50” to 54” HDTV market segment, 1080p LCD models outsold 1080p plasma models nearly three to one, even though the LCD models had average street prices 19% higher than the plasma models. LCDs continue to take market share away from plasma. As reported in their October Consumer 2007 Flat Panel Display Tracking Service, LCDs accounted for 80% of the total units sold in the flat panel TV market (models 26” or larger).
It’s interesting that LCDs are so much more popular, given their higher prices and a large number of reviewers who argue that plasmas deliver a better overall picture quality than LCD.
The research firm also found that 30-inches to 34-inches was the most popular HD television size range in the month, with a 28 percent share, followed by the 40-inch to 44-inch segment, with 26 percent of the market.
And compared with October 2006, the average price of an HD television was down 30 percent, while the number of HDTVs sold more than doubled.
Among the most-bought brands, Samsung came in first with a 19.6 percent share, followed by Sony (17.5 percent).
