Smart travelers have long known to check a flight’s status before heading for the airport. (There’s no sense in spending needless time at the departure lounge.) Now the folks at Google have made it easier for them to get the information they need.

The company announced yesterday that anyone can now get the latest information on a flight just by typing the airline and flight number into the main Google search bar. The first result will show whether a flight is on time and — if not — when it’s expected to take off or land.

Google isn’t the only company to offer such a search tool. Yahoo lets users check flights with only a few more words, and Obritz has its Traverler Update Service. There’s also a very cool site called FlightAware, which tracks every plane that’s up in the air at any given point. Google gets its info from FlightStats, another company with a Web site worth exploring.
