Most people i know are AFRAID of the Windows Registry. And rightly so as a single errant mistake can render an otheriwse powerful machine to a sputtering mess. Before you invoke the Windows Registry Editor by clicking Start, then Run, then typing regedit, let’s go through some helpful hints as provided by PC Magazine:
1. We are powerless over the risks of messing up the Windows Registry. The Registry is organized into structures known as hives. The same goes for killer bees. Coincidence? I don’t think so!
The two main parts of the Registry are not so memorably named HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_USERS. The first part holds setup information about the machine itself, and the second stores information specific to each user of that machine. The remaining parts of the Registry contain “reflections” of the information in the two main sections. So rather than resembling two hives of killer bees, the Registry looked to me like five hives of killer bees. A whole lot of killer bees, anyway. Nevertheless, I frequently hear about simple Registry tweaks that are genuinely useful and helpful. (See “15 Sneaky Registry Hacks”.)
2. Backing up the Registry before modifying it is essential. Everything you enter in the Registry is saved immediately and permanently
