Today’s flat-panel televisions may look far more elegant that traditional TVs, but they look downright obese next to the sets that are just starting to roll off the assembly lines.
Hitachi has already shown off an LCD prototype that’s just 3/4 of an inch thick. Now it says that it will show off a plasma that measures just 1.5 inches front to back at the Consumer Electronics Show, which starts Monday. (Existing flat screens typically measure 3 to 5 inches deep.)
Pretty neat, but Pioneer seems to be in its customary position ahead of the plasma pack. The company apparently plans to dazzle CES crowds with plasma screens that are just 9mm thick.
Less width presumably means less weight, which should make it a lot easier to hang or move these flatter screen televisions. I’d be even more enthusiastic about less energy consumption and, of course, better picture quality.
