Two TV makers, Mitsubishi and Pioneer, have both unveiled hotly anticipated prototype TVs at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show.
Mitsubishi uses a completely new technology, a laser light supply, and says its new TVs will be out this year. Pioneer uses an old technology, plasma, and makes no promises about a release date, except to say that it WON’T be this year.
By right, Mitsubishi should have generated more buzz on the show floor, but it hasn’t. Instead, people are speaking with excitement about Pioneer and with skepticism about Mitsubishi. Here’s why.
Pioneer demonstrates its prototype TV in a small theater that’s out on the main exhibition floor. Anyone can see the show, if they’ll wait in line.
Once inside, the see one of Pioneer’s current TVs, which are widely regarded to be the best in the world, sitting right next to the prototype. Then the two sets play the same thing so people can see exactly how much better the prototype is than the existing set.
And the comparison shows that it’s far, far better. In a darkened room, the prototype’s blacks are so black that the human eye can’t separate them from the plastic that surrounds the screen. No other TV even comes close.
But Mitsubishi’s demonstration was very different…
