Toshiba has made the Christmas deals permanent on HD DVDs. The MSRP of the entry-level HD-A3 is now $150. The high-end HD-A35 is $300.
Expect e-tailors to get final prices considerably lower. Amazon is already selling the two models for $133 and $276, respectively.
Toshiba explains the price cuts by citing big holiday-season sales and predicting more to come.
If Toshiba could put HD DVDs in enough homes, I suppose it’s possible that some movie studios might abandon Blu-ray for HD DVD, But with 70 percent of Hollywood currently supporting Blu-ray only, I sure wouldn’t buy an HD DVD player right now.
Some folks are speculating that even Toshiba has given up hope on HD DVD and is just clearing out its product backlog before announcing that it will throw in the towel on HD DVD.
