
Yes, it’s a huge upgrade. Apple TV will soon offer movie rentals, photo sharing and high definition. It also operates independent of any computer. Heck, Apple even provided the upgrade free to existing customers, which was unusually generous for the company.
But it should have been so much more.
Most importantly, Apple TV needs to take Web-based video WAY beyond iTunes and YouTube. There’s a lot of great content out there on sites like Hulu and Joost and dozens more that are dedicated to commercial products. And then there are sites like Vimeo, that compile HD video shot by amateurs.
Apple TV should make it simple to pull it all onto the big screen in your living room, but it doesn’t do any of that.
Perhaps Apple doesn’t want to make more competition for iTunes. Perhaps its studio partners wouldn’t allow Apple TV to be too powerful for fear of BitTorrent piracy.
Who knows, but consumers lost out.
