Ever since Microsoft released the Vista operating system last year, many users have complained that the massive program slows their computers down to a crawl.
Such folks will be happy to hear the Microsoft just released the first Vista service pack to manufacturing. If all goes well, it should be available for download by the middle of next month. (Customers who have set their computers to find updates automatically will begin to download the package in early April.)
Historically, Microsoft has used service packs to improve its operating systems in the years after their initial release. Windows XP, which now enjoys a pretty good reputation, absorbed a lot of criticism before service packs smoothed out rough edges. Microsoft expects SP1 do to do the same thing for Vista.
SP1 also includes changes focused on improving the performance of Windows Vista in areas that impact the customer experience the most. For instance, with SP1, copying or moving files around your PC, your home network or your corporate network should now be much faster — up to 50% faster in some scenarios (according to our internal tests). In addition, on many kinds of hardware, resuming a Windows Vista-based PC from sleep is faster on Service Pack 1.
