Victor told me this isn’t actually a new product, but the BBC reports that Sony will soon begin selling an interesting add-on to its PlayStation 3.

Dubbed PlayTV, the small black box will connect to your PlayStation via a USB cord and allow the device to function both as a digital video recorder and a remote video server.

Folks who own PlayStation Portables will be able to watch any show they’ve taped on PlayTV from any place they can get Internet access. Gamers could thus travel to the Olympics in China this summer without losing touch with their favorite shows back home.

Sony engineers actually invented PlayTV a couple years back, and Victor has tried in vain to get a review unit, but Sony never showed much interest in commercializing the device, until now.

Sony has long promised that the powerful computer chips in its gaming devices would support a wide variety of applications. This product launch — along with the recent announcement that the PSP now supports the Internet-telephone service Skype — shows the company is finally ready to make good on that promise.

No word, however, on prices or exact timing.
