It’s hard to select a single mobile phone because your needs vary from situation to situation.

When you’re in the office, you might want a smart phone with a full keyboard and a speedy email program. When you’re on a plane, you might want a phone with a big screen and a good video program. When you’re on the road, you might want a phone with GPS and a built-in navigation system.

No phone has ever been able to be all things to all users, but a tiny Israeli company called Modu hopes to change all that.

Later this year, Modu will start selling a tiny basic phone that fits into all sorts of specialized shells. Some shells will make the Modu into a smart phone. Other will make it into a video powerhouse.

The company demonstrated the device and a few shells last week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Initial reactions were generally positive. Insiders, along with a number of wireless giants that have signed up to partner with Modu, think the company has devised a breakthrough concept.

Here’s a decent story from the AP. Here’s an intro from the company. Click on the link at the right for a video of the Modu in action.

The idea is interesting. The real key, however, will probably be the pricing and functionality of the shells.
