For several years now, tech experts and data security firms have speculated on the possibility of cyber warfare, a series of coordinated computer attacks on utility companies, government agencies and so forth meant to shut down basic services, terrorize the population and make you late for work (you know, ’cause the traffic lights would all be set to green).

Fortunately, the prospect of a Bruce Willis beatdown has kept that nightmare scenario at bay.

However, the bad guys may have decided not to bother with a complicated, expensive and doomed (thanks to Willis) cyber war, and are settling for just picking up some big bolt cutters and chopping off our Internet access altogether.

According to the International Telecommunication Union
, that may be what happened in late January and early February, when five undersea cables providing telecom services to the Middle East and Asia were severed.

“We do not want to preempt the results of ongoing investigations, but we do not rule out that a deliberate act of sabotage caused the damage to the undersea cables over two weeks ago,” the UN agency’s head of development, Sami al-Murshed, told AFP.

Great. Anyone know if Willis can scuba dive?
