Irony alert: AT&T blasts cable for lying about Internet speeds

AT&T Telecom Operations Group president John Stankey, speaking at a Wall Street conference Wednesday, said cable companies that promise Internet connection speeds of up to 8 megabits per second typically deliver well less than 1 megabit per second.
The cable companies, he said, can build 8 Mb connections to the home but lack the larger networks needed to actually deliver promised speeds.
I’m glad he called the cable companies out, but I haven’t seen much benefit from that AT&T network he went on to brag about.
I buy a mid-tier DSL connection from AT&T that promises speeds up to 2 Mbs. When I actually download files of any size, however, I consistently get speeds around 200 Kbs — about 90 percent less than advertised — and the top speed I’ve gotten on any file transfer ever was just over 500 Kbs.
