Engadget reports that Asus has unveiled the inevitable (but much anticipated) successor to its popular Eee PC: an Eee PC with a slightly larger screen.
While that sounds like the punchline to a joke, this is actually a tremendous improvement.
I thought the original Eee with its 7-inch screen was a wonderful device, prevented from being an every-day laptop only by its squinty screen.
But at 9 inches (well, 8.9 officially), the new screen looks much more comfortable for long browsing sessions or composing lengthy documents.
The only concern now is the price. Engadget mentioned that a model with a 12-gigabyte Flash drive is priced at 399 euros. At current exchange rates, that’s about $600, which is a little too steep for a mini-machine like the Eee.
But if Asus can launch the new machine — reportedly called the Eee PC 900 — for $400 this summer, this will be a blockbuster, and I’ll personally start saving my pennies to buy one.
