Sound and Vision magazine reports that experts estimate that as many as one-third of home-theater-in-a-box buyers never connect their rear speakers.

Why?

Wires.

While having a full 5.1 surround sound system sounds great, those two rear speakers often require an ugly run of cables going from the receiver to the rear of the living room, and disguising or covering the cables can be difficult.

I’ve had this problem myself.

When my wife and I lived in an apartment, I bought a low-end HTIB. Our living room was a standard square shape with a single doorway, so I could run the cable for the rear speakers along a wall and behind our couches.

But the living room in our house has three doorways, and there’s just no way to hide the wires.

Not that I mind, but my wife had other thoughts…

So I never bothered to hook up my receiver at all, and just use the speakers on my TV. Lame, I know, but it does simplify things.
