Apple’s decision to give third party developers limited access to the iPhone (and iPod Touch) seems like mostly good news to me.

Ideally, Apple would let developers create apps that could be downloaded directly to the iPhone without needing approval from Apple, but going through an official “App store” could be beneficial if Apple doesn’t restrict too heavily the type of software that goes up.

But I wonder if Apple starts working internally on some kind of cool program for the iPhone and an enterprising programmer beats them to the punch and wants to put their project on the App store, will Apple let them do it? Or will stories start to trickle out about Apple refusing permission for software that Apple itself would prefer to make and sell?

I’m also intrigued by the iPhone and Touch as gaming platforms. You can read some of my thoughts on that over at our gaming blog. I’ll just say that I’m surprised it took Apple this long to embrace such a lucrative industry.
