I briefly tested out the new HD on-demand service from Fios last night, and what I saw, I liked.
The basic breakdown is that television shows are free while movies cost $5.99 per rental.
That seems steep, and I didn’t rent one to test, but there were a few dozen fairly new films available. It looked like the selection was slanted towards action/guy movies (3:10 to Yuma, Shoot ‘Em Up, etc.), but Ratatouille was there, as well, along with a variety of other flicks.
And Verizon is promising more than 1,000 HD on-demand titles this year.
I did play some of the TV shows, including an episode of Numb3rs.
Playback started in seconds, and the image quality was nice, if not as good as what you see on a normal live broadcast. Ideally, Verizon would post every episode on the service, so you could watch the entire series, if you wanted to, instead of the handful on the menu now.
But if you missed the most recent episode and forget to TiVo it, this is a good way to catch up.
Overall, I think the Fios on-demand HD service is nice — if rather late — but I’m curious what some of the more passionate Fios critics have to say.
