Actually, I think this Popular Science writer is being a bit too harsh with some of his predictions on how the upcoming 3G version of the iPhone will fall short.

For example, how can you complain that the battery life will likely be sub par, but also insist that the failure to include a video camera would be a monstrous affront?

Adding video capabilities is just going to put more of a strain on the battery.

I understand the writer’s point that Apple and every other consumer electronics maker is guilty of built-in obsolescence for their devices.

But prolonging battery life in high-end mobile devices isn’t a simple or artificial problem, as I wrote in an article a few months ago.

And throwing every possible feature into a device does inevitably make the machine more expensive (although I’ll admit the lack of copy-and-paste functionality is a bit insulting).

If Apple can just ad 3G and GPS to the iPhone and ensure at least 12-14 hours of battery life between charges, I think it the iPhone 2 will qualify as a substantial upgrade.
