Given that you’re reading a technology blog, you’re probably not all that confused about the digital television transition next February 17.
If you haven’t heard of the DTV conversion, here’s all you need to know:
1. If you get your TV from cable or satellite or the phone company, you won’t be affected.
2. If you don’t have an HDTV and you get programs over the air, you’ll need to buy a converter box sometime between now an next February and spend 5 minutes plugging it in to your TV.
The boxes only cost about $50 now and that price will probably fall below $30 when manufacturers really start cranking them out.
Fortunately, you won’t even have to pay that money from your own pocket: the wise people who run the country have decided that TV is such a fundamental right that the government will pay for your converter boxes if you sign up for vouchers.
That, right there, is ALL you need to know about the DTV conversion, but if it strikes you as impossibly complex, rest easy:
North Texans curious, or confused, about the February 17, 2009 digital television transition (DTV) will find answers at a community forum presented by Time Warner Cable, CBS 11 and TXA 21 at the Palace Theater, 300 South Main Street in Grapevine, on May 27 at 7:30 p.m. The DTV forum is free and open to the first 200 who register.
