We get a lot of stupid gadget promotions from tech companies here for holidays like Mother’s Day, high school/college graduation (please, PR firms, no more “dads and grads” press releases) and Father’s Day.
Generally, those promos go straight into the delete file.
But I have to admit this $299 ESPN universal remote (available for pre-order on Amazon.com) being pitched for Father’s Day is kind of cool.
The remote controls all of your home theater gear, of course, but also has built in Wi-Fi so you can browse the Web on a 2.2-inch screen, scroll through TV listings and, of course, access an ESPN sports ticker service.
ESPN — or, more accurately, the Chinese contract manufacturer that is building these for ESPN — probably would have been better going with a pure touchscreen device for a larger display, given all the software applications on this thing.
But it does look like a fun piece of hardware for sports- and gadget-minded dads.
