OmniVision Technologies says it has developed a new type of image sensor that’ll greatly improve cellphone cameras.
The new sensors — which should start appearing in high-end phones next year and trickle down to the rest of the market — will push the upper limit of camera resolution from about 3 megapixels to 8 megapixels.
Sounds good, but researchers will need to develop more than just fancy sensors if cellphones are ever to produce decent photos.
They’ll also need to cut the cost and size of several other components and invent something entirely new: a lens that never smudges no matter how many times people rub their greasy fingers over it.
