Asus will be releasing five laptop models with the Linux-based Splashtop operating system that supposedly boots in just a few seconds.

You’re basically only getting Firefox and Skype, but if all you want to do is surf the Web, check your Web-based e-mail, or make a VOIP call, that should be fine.

Here’s a promo from Asus for the OS, which Asus has rebranded as Express Gate:

The five models that will include Splashtop are the M70T, M50V, M51T, F8Va, and F8Vr, and they’re all expected to be available in late June or early July.

By the way, the Asus Eee PC (at least the Linux version) is nearly an instant-on laptop, as well, but with far more applications than the Splashtop models.

Here’s my video review I did last year of the original Eee, and you can see the boot time at about the 55 second mark.
