Update: The Planet continues recovery from power outage at hosting facility
Posted by: in General NewsLooks like the electrical fire at The Planet’s Houston hosting facility was worse than originally feared, and many of the servers there are apparently still offline.
On The Planet’s corporate blog, chairman and CEO Douglas Erwin explained what happened:
While no customer servers have been damaged or lost, we have new information that damage to our H1 data center is worse than initially expected. Three walls of the electrical equipment room on the first floor blew several feet from their original position, and the underground cabling that powers the first floor of H1 was destroyed.
According to SyndicatedElitist.com, over 700,000 Web sites went dark when The Planet’s facility lost power.
Normally in these situations, backup power systems switch on automatically, but the staff at The Planet said the fire department told them to deactivate the backup power due to the damage to the physical power lines running into the building.
