When I made the switch from Release Candidate 3 to the final version of Firefox 3, I lost the use of a couple add-ons, most notably the Skype extension that makes all phone numbers on the Web into click-to-call buttons.
A couple days later, I started noticing that both my browser and all the other programs on my computer would grind to a near halt from time to time.
I decided to close Firefox and relaunch it, but when I clicked the button to open the program again, a window told me that Firefox was already running.
I hit control + alt + delete, opened the Task Manager and looked on the processes tab. Sure enough. Firefox was working invisibly and eating up most of my computer’s RAM and CPU. I halted the program and launched it again, but the same problem kept re-occuring.
Glitch in the program?
To some degree, yes, but it’s an easy one to fix. I uninstalled Firefox 3 and reinstalled it, but that didn’t work. The next time I uninstalled it, I checked the box that asked if I wanted to erase all my Firefox settings.
The next installation of Firefox worked perfectly.
A couple warnings: If you tell the program to forget all your settings, it will forget all your saved passwords, so if you don’t know them all go to Preferences — Security — Passwords and copy them all down before you erase your info.
Also, you’ll have to reinstall all of the add-ons you use.
If you’re willing to do all that, however, it should get rid of any problems you’ve been having and let you enjoy all of that Firefox goodness you’ve been reading about.
