When the MacBook Air came out in late January, many observers predicted that the cost of its optional solid state drive would plummet from $1,000 to some price that sane people might actually pay for its limited benefits.

But six months have come and gone — along with a lot of stories about SSD prices falling in general — but the SSD option on the MacBook Air is still as expensive as ever (and it doesn’t seem like they’ve improved the drive but kept the price constant).

Is anyone buying the MacBook Air with the solid say drive?

If not, why won’t Apple lower the price? Was it losing money initially when it came out and keeping the price constant so it can begin making returns?

I realize Apple is generally willing to sacrifice volume for margins, but I can’t envision anyone is getting the SSD at current prices, so I can’t understand the strategy.
