Unlike Andrew, I have all the necessary equipment to try out this neat trick, and I can definitely report that it works (with some patience).

The set up process worked as described, but I ran into a problem were, when I tried to play a video on my TV through my Xbox 360, I kept getting an error message saying the video was corrupted or in an unplayable codec.

Every time that happened, though, I would get a prompt asking me if I wanted to initialize the video player. I clicked yes, but had the error repeat.

After repeating the process several times, though, (a tactic recommended by the developers of the software hack), my video finally started playing.

Huzzah!

After that, every video played flawlessly.

There have been rumors for some time that Microsoft and Netflix will eventually officially support streaming video via Netflix on the game console.

Given the relative simplicity of this hack, I think there’s no doubt that Microsoft and Netflix will eventually offer this service, and eliminate the need for a Vista PC to boot.

The holdup, though, I suspect is more financial than technological.

Right now, Microsoft’s video download service on the Xbox 360 is a pay-to-play service, whereas Netflix offers instant viewing for free to all current subscribers.

Does the Netflix service replace the Microsoft video store? Do they operate in tandem?

I think that approach might make the most sense, with new movie releases from Microsoft available for a fee, and Netflix offering its back catalog for free.

Make it so!
