My post about AT&T’s prices for iPhone 3G text message plans inspired one reader to remind me that mega-margins for extra features are nothing new:
Compare caller ID on cell phones vs land lines. I have been told by someone who has been in the phone industry for over 20 years that it cost approximately five cents to provide caller ID on your land line. Look at a recent bill (or find someone who still has a land line) and see what you are paying for it. Even worse, business rates add another $3.00 to $4.00 PER line for caller ID. While on the cell side caller ID is included in the base rate.
Point taken.
