There have been reports all morning of people having trouble upgrading the software in their first-generation iPhones from version 1.1.4 to version 2.0.

But I’ve just gotten word from reader Mike Trovalli in Frisco that the update to iTunes (the software that allows the iPhone to synch not just your music and movies but also the other programs on your computer) is causing major problems.

The software glitches you’ve been blogging about seem to be affecting existing iPhones as well.

iTunes 7.7 wreaked havoc on my Outlook during its first sync. I had calendar reminders from over a year ago popping up and I got a message telling me iTunes wanted to change greater than 5% of my contacts which I have over 1,000 of. I canceled out on that.

I also got the note telling me an update to 2.0 was available for my iPhone. When I clicked download & install, nothing happened then it kept telling me version 1.1.4 was the current version.

I’m really not sure why I decided to try this today… I should have waited!

Another reader, Jason, wrote of a similar experience:

Even people with older iphones are having problems. I was unlucky enough to upgrade my software this morning and now my phone can only be used for emergency calls. I have no idea when I might be able to use it again.
