How to: Keep from losing your laptop at the airport (or anywhere else)
Posted by: in General NewsI recently wrote about a survey commissioned by Dell that found that more than 12,000 laptop computers are lost in U.S. airports every week.
In response, local tech consultant Bob Potter e-mailed me his strategy for keeping track of all his electronic devices when he travels.
It’s great stuff, and I thought I’d share it with you readers:
I have never lost my laptop; perhaps this is why. I protect against an accidental loss by pasting a sticker on each side of my laptop which says “If found, please contact me ……my address, phone number, email, etc.
Also, to distinguish my laptop, I paste four ½ inch by 4″ colored labels on each side. This gives it a unique look. I think it would be less likely to be accidentally picked up by a stranger. I am not sure if I have been lucky, or this technique has discouraged accidental loss.
I also use a variant of this approach on my IPAQ and dictating machine. I do not put a sticker on my cell phone, but do have an ICE (In Case of Emergency) number in it.
Here (with Bob’s permission) is a picture of his laptop:

Yeah, that’s going to be pretty hard to miss.
