As I updated the iPhone availability list this morning, part of me felt that I was doing my readers a disservice by enabling self-destructive behavior. Make no mistake: I love the phone, but it’s not worth the effort and risk of buying one right now.

For one thing, there’s really no need to wait in line for a pocket-sized computer that makes telephone calls. Waiting the first day is a fun social event. Waiting a week later is a waste of your time. Unless you have no working cellular service and need it desperately, don’t bother. It’s a very nice phone but you can wait a week.

More importantly, the software just doesn’t work right. I’ve read multiple reports of nearly every failure imaginable. Safari freezes up. Safari crashes unexpectedly. The SMS program goes crazy. Users can’t pick up incoming calls. Sometimes the entire system crashes and renders your phone a brick.

Apple will certainly fix all this within a couple weeks. Avoid the headaches. Wait for the fixes. If the fixes don’t come as soon as I predict (I’m frankly shocked that Apple hasn’t come out with a fix already) you’ll be doubly glad you waited.
