Google's Picasa will recognize and tag people's faces in your photos
Posted by: in General NewsAll this talk of Google’s new browser has obscured another announcement that I find more interesting, at least in the short term.
Google will launch a new version of Picasa at noon Pacific today, one that will automatically recognize and tag faces in your pictures.
Actually, it won’t be fully automatic. Not even Google’s computers can recognize faces without first being trained — at least I hope not.
Seriously, though, if you have a good shot of someone — and you tell program who that person is — Picasa can sort through the rest of your pictures and put a tag on every photo has that same person.
This is a huge help for people who have thousands of photographs and want an easy way to search for pictures of certain people.
It’s a huge problem for companies like Tagcow, which charges $10 per 250 for a similar, though more thorough, tagging service.
It’s good news for people like me, however, people who are both lazy and cheap.
It sort of looks like I knew what I was doing I left all my photos to sit on my Picasa account.
