Sounds like Apple has an interesting application in the works for iPhone and iPod Touch. Purchase an album from iTunes and this new application digs up artwork and other extras. The coolest feature plays the lyrics in time with each song as you hear it — sort of like a karaoke machine.

According to MusicWeek, a new album from a group called Snow Patrol will be launched at the same time as the application — sometime next month — and be the first that works with it.

Assuming it doesn’t cost any extra, I’m pretty excited about this feature. I’m an old guy now, so I can’t distinguish the lyrics of the songs that the kids listen to these days.

The only negative I have the ability to think of is the simple access to lyrics through a portable device will encourage people to sing in public.
