Reason to hope for the impossible: decent cellphone call quality
Posted by: in General NewsAudience, a California-based company that makes chips for cell phones, states it can greatly improve call quality with technology that mimics the human ear.
How does it work?
Envision a two-mic set up. One rests right next to the user’s mouth. The other sits somewhere on the back of the phone.
The distance between the two devices is tiny, but even over those small spaces the sound from your voice will hit the first mic before the second and background noise will hit the second mic before the first.
That slight time lag helps the system distinguish one from the other. Audience chips then cut out the background noise.
How much does this technology help call quality?
According to an independent study, the Audience system boost quality ratings by .77 points on a five-point scale. That might not sound like much, but it’s really a big number.
The Audience system is already available in two cell phones. One — surprise! — sells in Japan. The other — another surprise! — sells in Korea.
There’s no word on US availability.
