Every company with a hot product eventually slips off the pedestal.
Netscape eventually burned out, Motorola’s RAZR phone came and went, Hummer SUVs transformed from status symbol to joke in record time and Sony ruled the video game world with the PS2 but is struggling with the PS3.
So, while Apple has had an unusually long reign at the top of the gadget heap, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the iPod and iPhone maker eventually saw consumer interest turn somewhere else.
If you look at the sales numbers, that seems like an odd statement to make right now.
But I think the turn is happening, and I think it began with the iPhone 3G.
The device was marred by a rocky launch, and Steve Jobs has been reduced to touting bug fixes and firmware updates as major upcoming features.
The rollouts yesterday of the updates to the iPod Touch and Nano lines didn’t exactly set the tech world on fire, either.
I think Apple is finally starting to run out of huge, fresh ideas for its products.
Tweaking and polishing are fine, but they aren’t what propelled Apple from the brink of financial ruin to electronics powerhouse.
It will be interesting to see if Apple and Jobs can get their mojo back, or whether some other company is about to claim the throne of electronics king.
