If you’re reading a technology blog, you probably have a handle on this digital Television transition thing, but just in case you don’t, here are the basics.

If you watch TV via cable or satellite, you’re fine. If you get your signal over the air, and you’ve an old, bulky TV you need a converter box.

You can buy such a box pretty much anywhere you can purchase a Television and, fortunately, the government is handing out coupons so you won’t even have to pay anything for it. You can apply for coupons at the DTV 2009 Conversion Web site.

If you have a converter box — and you’ve installed it — and you want to make sure it works properly, tune in to Channel 21 on Tuesday, Sept. 16 between 7 and 7:30 p.m. or between 8 and 8:30 p.m.

During each of those half hour periods, the station will cut its analog signal for a one-minute period. During the test period, viewers whose TVs are not equipped to receive the digital signal will see a graphic message informing them that they are not ready for the transition.

If you don’t see that message, you’re ready for the transition. If you do, you need to fix something.
