Rather than springing for a whole year of one magazine, consumers can now switch subscriptions each month — thanks to a new service called Maghound.

As the headline implies, Maghound works much like Netflix. Users can choose among four plans: three magazines a month for $4.95, five for $7.95, seven for $9.95 or $1 extra per month for every magazine beyond seven.

Customers can currently choose among 230 different magazine titles, and Maghound plans to add more.

The beauty of the idea, in my eyes, is the flexibility. If I pick up a magazine at the newsstand, enjoy reading it and decide to subscribe for a year, I’m stuck with it — even if I hate subsequent issues.

If I subscribe to a magazine through Maghound, I have the ability to dump it instantly and try something new had very tiny risk. I can also manage all my magazine subscriptions through one Web site.
