ericssonslide Ericsson predicts cell phones in 2012 to have 12-20 megapixel cameras, 1024x768 screen resolution, other goodies

I actually think that, in some ways, this slide from Ericsson understates just how incredibly powerful smart phones and other high-end portable devices will be in four years.

In addition to all the hardware features listed on that slide, and data download rates possibly as high as 100 megabits per second on new high speed wireless networks, there’s also the question of storage capacity and video projection.

On the storage front, I would assume that many phones will pack 512 gigs of memory in four years, and possibly more, given that at least one company today already has Flash memory drives with 1.6 terabytes of storage.

What will you do with all that space?

Well, assuming you can squeeze one of the new pocket projectors into a cellphone, which is the goal of at least one company, upgrade the resolution on the projector to high-def quality and add a graphics chip robust enough to output HD video, you could have a real movie theater in your pocket.

And with that one gigahertz processor, you could also make your phone into a almost full-fledged personal, and just insert it into a docking station whenever you get to work so that you can dispense with a separate laptop.

Man, the future can’t get here soon enough.
