Microsoft is phasing out its anti-virus and system-monitoring program called Windows Live OneCare in favor of a new, stripped-down program called Morro.

Morro will be offered as a free download, and is expected to be released sometime in the second half of 2009.

The new program will work with Windows XP, Vista, and the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. But Morro won’t be bundled with any OS, which will likely defuse any monopolistic concerns.

‘Free’ is always welcome, but I’m not really clear on why Microsoft is killing OneCare, since Morro won’t have all the features that pay-to-use OneCare does and the new software seems designed mostly for low-cost, low-end systems.

I’m a OneCare user and it’s worked fine for me and I wouldn’t mind seeing stick around. Oh, well.
