google-mobile-app.jpgEnvision sharing a word with voice-recognition software, only to hear system confirm your word as “sex”. That’s what some people with British accents reported about Google’s voice-based search tool, part of Google’s recently released Mobile App for the iPhone:

The free application, which grants iPhone owners to use the Google search engine with their voice, mistook the word iPhone for “sex”, “Einstein” and “kitchen sink,” … “Awesome job google. only problem is each time I say the word ‘fish’ it registers as sex,” wrote one, identified as Kevin.

Check out the app page here.

Geeksugar does a great job of reminding us that WiFi FreeSpot maintains a list of free hotspots throughout the US and in some countries. Though I’ve been to the Philippines, and “Manila Int. Airport - smoking area - Luzon” definitely doesn’t carry free WiFi—at least when I was there last. (wififreespot.com)

nrdc_price_of_play_350x.jpgAccording to tree-hugging journalist Lori Bongiorno, the Wii is a great choice for anyone looking to cut down on the electric bill. Here are the key points of her article:

Sony Playstation 3 is the most power-hungry model. For the 2007 version, you’ll spend about $12 a year if you turn the console off when you’re not using it, compared to about $134 if you leave it on all the time.

Microsoft Xbox 360
ranks a close second. If you shut it down when you’re not playing a game or watching a movie, it costs about $11 to operate annually. Leaving it on continuously will cost you $103.

Nintendo Wii uses significantly less energy than the others. It costs about $3 a year if you turn it off after use, compared to about $10 if you don’t.

Then again, as the obnoxious commenters of Lori’s article point out, who the heck leaves their gaming console on the whole day?!

iphone-dick.gifAbsolutely hilarious and sad at the same time: “Susan042764″ hit the Apple.com forums, asking for help from the community. She discovered her husband sent an email to another woman—with a “raunchy” pictured of himself attached.

Already suffering from infidelity paranoia, poor Susan confronted her husband. His response? The most creative reinterpretation of “it wasn’t me” ever! He claimed that the iPhone suffers from a glitch, where photos mysteriously attach themselves to emails and are marked as sent, even if no such message was sent! Now that’s some fiction!

I could be wrong, but let’s see. As far as I know:

  • Messages only end up in the sent folder when they’re actually sent
  • Images never automatically attach themselves to emails
  • If such a glitch is true, then the maker of the iPhone (Apple) must’ve done something really really wrong

Oh no! Quite a dilemma for Susan’s husband! Does he:

  1. Admit that he was lying
  2. Stick with his story and declare Apple’s QA standards really awful

In any case, visit the thread for guaranteed hilarity. And do help out Susan, as she’s declared “Has anyone ever heard of this happening? The future of my marriage depends on this answer!”

legacy-usb-joystick.jpegWhen the Atari 2600 first came out back in ‘77, I wasn’t even an itch in my dad’s pants. But I totally understand why everyone went gaga over the system, and why old fogeys still relish their days on the pioneering gaming machine. That’s what I feel for my NES after all.

In any case, this aptly-named Legacy USB joystick mimics the original joystick of said Atari console, but works like any other game controller designed for the desktop. It plugs in with any Personal computer, Mac, or Linux machine via USB, and costs $15. Just like the original, the controller comes with one button, but according to everythingUSB, it’s possible to modify the joystick to accommodate 10 more.

dave-barmy-home-wrecker.jpg

Ok, Second Life user Amy Taylor, aren’t you taking things a bit too seriously? Apparently Ms. Taylor is filing for divorce “on the ground of unreasonable behavior after her husband admitted to falling in love with the virtual female character.” Said virtual home wrecker was caught with ex-husband’s David Pollard’s avatar (both pictured above) “in a compromising position on a sofa.”

dave-pollard-amy-taylor.jpg

Allowed, there’s some betrayal here committed by the real-life David to the real-life Amy (pictured above). But why let somewhat virtual reality lead to the end of an apparently fruitful real-world relationship. Then again, Mr. Pollard complained that “his former wife was more interested in her life online than she was in him”. Ah, that explains it David! You choose to break her heart in a place that literally meant the world to her.

In any case, maybe the end of the marriage is a good thing. Can you envision how their children would’ve turned out? (timesonline.co.uk)

Star Trek is great, because it’s a reason why many of us got so into gadgets and technology in the first place. Now that J.J. Abrams & Co. have finally decided to release a full-blown trailer, because it makes Might ‘09 seem so far far away.

star-trek-2009.jpg

Too bad no one’s ripped the file and put it up on YouTube. Right now you can only rely on bootlegs, or the real deal over at Apple.com.

Let’s be a tiny Mac snobbish, shall we? All those who think the new Star Trek will suck, screw you. Let’s give the new makers the benefit of the doubt! Go for a reboot and wipe clean all that established (if slightly contradictory) mythos? Are you mad?

samsung-sh-s223q.jpg

Test Freaks recently played around with a Samsung SH-S223Q, a burner that promise DVD write speeds of 22x. While that may be too fast for now (the review writer admits that “there is no media capable of that yet that I know of”), the Super-Writemaster might actually represent a long-term fixture on your constantly updated desktop. The money quote:

There’s no doubt the Samsung Super Write-Master is most likely the fastest drive out there this day, it’s quiet and from my testing results you can see it burns media pretty fast. The drive is also fairly quiet, which is very nice as some drives are very loud, I also had no problems with any media compatibilities either, it played every disc I put in just fine.

Speed comparison graphs and more pictures available from image source.

nokia-n96.jpg

The Nokia N96 is massive. That’s the first thing you notice when you hold this phone in your hand. Then you notice the slight UI lag, perhaps caused by all those features crammed into a phone. Less obvious is the available 16GB of onboard memory, which makes microSDs unnecessary. In any case, a full review to follow; more photos available over at Philippine affiliate Technograph.
